Sept. 9 - Day 4 - The Canterbury Shaker Village

Day 3

Last evening's spaghetti dinner was a great success. The food was good and the adults and young adults who made and served the food were outstanding.

Winnie and I returned to our coach expecting a quiet and relaxing evening. It didn’t quite turn out that way. For some unknown reason, our propane warning system decided that we had enough sleep and awoke us a 3:45 AM with a noise that only and early warning system can make. There was no propane leak, but the propane leak detector was not convinced and continued to warn us until I opened the coach door and overhead vent to clear the air in the coach. That worked, however, by this time I was wide awake.

The only answer to help me sleep again was to return to reading a James Patterson novel entitled, Cradle and All. The plan backfired because the book is so exciting; it is difficult to put down. Finally at 6:00 AM sleep returned.

The agenda for today was to visit the Canterbury Shaker Village. http://www.shakers.org/
The literature states that the “Canterbury Shaker Village is a national historic landmark and museum in Canterbury, New Hampshire, with 25 restored and 4 reconstructed Shaker buildings. Its 694 acre site includes gardens, fields, ponds and forests. Known for its tranquil beauty, the village offers tours, exhibits, workshops, family programs, hiking trails, unique shopping and delicious food”.

Our tour guide Darryl Thompson not only provided additional information about the Shakers, but brought the people and their culture to life.

Below are some pictures of the Shaker Village, but they do not do justice to this beautiful historic site.

The tour was followed by a very tasty lunch in the Shaker Table Restaurant.

Our next destination is the Harbor Hill Camping Area http://www.hhcamp.com/ in Meredeth, NH. We are finally heading for Lake Winnipesaukee.
